Southern Premier League Division 2 - Week 10 Report Mike Vimpany - 9 July 2000
Hursley Park are deep in Southern Premier League Division Two relegation strife after suffering a 69-run defeat at bottom club Alton. With all the clubs immediately above them having won at least four games, Hursley will need to win a minimum of three of their remaining eight matches to avoid the drop. Wins for Hambledon, by seven wickets over Old Tauntonians and Romsey, and Lymington, against United Services, compounded Hursley's misery. Hursley were shot out for 68 by Alton, who had lost all seven of their previous games. Brian Rotherham (4-15) and Howard Gadsby (3-20) did the damage for Alton, who were in trouble themselves at 31-4 until Richie Morgan lashed 85, including two 6s and nine fours. Despite Ross Cambray (3-34), Alton reached 137 ... and then celebrated Hursley's demise. Zac Morris (57) and Dave Griffiths (41 not out) won the day for Lymington, who dropped to 76-5 before beating United Sevices by four wickets. Martin Hunt, Phil Pineo and Morris captured two wickets each as Lymington restricted US to 173-8 (Matthew Keech 38). Portsmouth surrendered their Division 2 leadership after a 118-run thrashing by Premier League cup finalists, Liphook and Ripsley. Raj Maru's decision to put Liphook into bat backfired as the East Hampshire club crached 246-8 through Steve Riley (94), Duncan Berry (43) and Mayu Pasupati (39). Dave Tiller took 4-56 before demoralised Portsmouth sank to 128 all out (James Moon 34), with Pasupati (4-25), Tim Wheatley (2-20) and Hampshire's Charlie van der Gucht (2-34) on top. Former Bashley youngster Ben Nolan (2-30) and Keech (2-31) had Lymington struggling, but erratic follow-up bowling enabled Morris and Griffiths to turn the tide. The stylish David James struck his maiden Southern League century as Winchester KS trimmed Trojans by 19 runs in a rain cut affair at River Park. James arrived at the crease with Paul Marks and Chris Stradling dismissed and Winchester wobbling at 7-2. But the talented one-time Sparsholt left-hander struck ten boundaries in a maiden 103 which, with Raj Naik (62), sent Winchester's total raching to 241-8. A rain interruption reduced Trojans' target to 217 off 45 overs, but apart from Simon Williams (43), few batsmen prospered against the off-spin of Olli Green (4-59). Trojans dipped to 115-7 before Neil Sutherland (42 not out) and Jamie Donaldson (32 not out) came together with an unbroken ninth-wicket stand, which took the visitors' reply on to 198-8.
