Southern Premier League Division 1 - Week 10 Report
Mike Vimpany - 9 July 2000

Havant are firm favourites to become the inaugural ECB Southern Premier League champions after crushing B.A.T.Sports by seven wickets at Southern Gardens.

They exploited damp, overcast conditions initially to reduce B.A.T. to 78-6 and then successfully overhaul their opponents' 157-9 with Hampshire's Jason Laney hitting 64 not out.

B.A.T. lost home-bound Kenyan Kennedy Otieno (10) and Richard Kenway (0) to slip catches by Richard Hindley inside the opening hour, and fell deeper into trouble when Damian Shirazi (18) departed.

Left-arm spinner Stephen Foulger (3-42) and Richard Lewis (1-8 in 9 overs) did the initial damage for Havant.

John Claughton (22), who collects his third Oxford Blue in tomorrow's Varsity match at Lord's, rallied.

But Havant continued to chip away, with Phil Loat (3-50) and Hindley (2-36) achieving further breakthrough before Terry Rawlins (42 not out) joined Chris Thomason (36) to lift B.A.T.'s total to 157-9.

B.A.T. removed Andy Perry (11) cheaply, but Laney, with 64 not out, and Hindley, whose 53 contained 10 boundaries, effectively ended the game as a contest to set up Havant's comfortable seven-wicket win.

Third-placed Andover were frustrated by Russell Rowe, whose undefeated 88 enabled struggling South Wilts to salvage a draw at London Road.

Rowe held firm while wickets crashed all around him - Roger Miller (5-39) inflicting a series of early body blows to have South Wilts reeling at 30-4 after Andover had posted 209-7.

But South Wilts mounted a successful backs-to-the-wall campaign to close at 182-6, although they were never in a position to threaten Andover's total.

Andover's 209-7 was built around an undefeated 96 by Ian Langdown and Jerry Hayward (51), who added 124 for the fourth wicket, Roger Sillence took 4-71.

Spirited Calmore Sports lost by one wicket at Bashley (Rydal), with last pair Ian Hilsum (28 early difficulty at and Matt King (3-42), but rallied initially, through Hampshire's Lee Savident (60) and Gregg Lewis (36).

Teenage sixth-wicket duo Paul Cass (29) and Peter Clark (22) added a further 46 to lift Calmore to 180 all out.

"Calmore didn't get the rewards they deserved from the game," conceded Bashley skipper Neil Taylor.

Burridge, facing a critical visit to South Wilts on Saturday, batted out time to gain a draw against Hungerford, whose 202-9 was beyond their hosts' compass.

Jim Ettridge (72) and Steve Wyatt (30) effectively made the game safe for Hungerford, despite Paul Ancell's 5-63 return.

Ross Hunter (42) and Mark Richards (31) appeared to have eased Burridge into a promising position at 98-2, but David Pryke (3-32) and Duncan Johnson (2-91 in 33 overs) negated any further middle-order progress.

John Francis (34) occupied the creased as the game died a slow, agonising death - Burridge, despite their desperate position, being content to play out time at 171-8.

Bournemouth rattled up 262-6, reduced Cove to 16-6, but were still able unable to force a victory from a one-sided affair at Chapel Gate.

Cove staged a dogged rearguard action, with their tailenders frustrating Bournemouth for almost two hours to salvage a draw at 164-9.

Dorset all-rounder Peter Deakin almost celebrated his Bournemouth debut with a century ... only to be run out for 98. %0 as the game died a slow, agonising death - Burridge, despite their desperate position, being content to play out time at 171-8.

Deakin and Matt Swarbrick (70) dominated Bournemouth's massive 262-6, but could hardly believe it as Cove managed to salvage a draw.

Dan Britton (3-33), David Kidner (2-7) and Joe Wilson (2-15) had Cove reeling at 16-6, but had to wait until 80 before they removed the defiant Peter Blythe (37).

All seemed lost when Cove plunged deeper into the mire at 103-9, but Troy Tomsett (44 not out) and Joe Ashton (36 not out) held out in a defiant last-wicket stand to deny Bournemouth at 164-9.
