Southern Premier League Division 2 - Week 9 Report Mike Vimpany - 2 July 2000
Max Smith produced a stunning all-round performance to lead Old Tauntonians and Romsey to a 32-run win over Southern Premier Division Two rivals, Winchester K.S. at River Park. He hit 72 during a century opening partnership with Charles Forward (51) before ripping through the Winchester batting with a career-best return of 7-40. Jeremy Ord played a significant role too, clouting 30 off 18 balls after OTRs had slipped from 101-0 to 157-5. He helped OTs to 204-9 off a rain-trimmed 45 overs before dismissing Paul Marks (24), Chris Stradling (20) and Raj Naik (19) to leave Winchester 72-3. But Smith wasn't to be denied the star award, removing Winchester's last seven batsmen at a personal cost of 40 off 8.5 overs. Winchester were dismissed for 172. Rob Savage will be out of action for the remainder of the season after fracturing his collar bone in a fielding accident early in United Services' eight-wicket win over Hursley Park. Savage was taken to hospital after falling heavily on his right shoulder in an extra-cover collision with Bangladesh captain Aminul Islam. Despite Savage's absence, US comfortably overhauled Hursley's 215-6, with ex-Hampshire all-rounder Matthew keech and Islam sharing an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 140. Keech hit 13 fours in an unbeaten 105 - his second century of the season - while Islam scored 54 not out. Hursley Park, minus Iain Brunnschweiler, John Harris and Chris Tremlett, relied heavily on Paul Edwards (57), Dave Wilcockson (37) and Ben Smyth (34 not out). Andy Ford took 3-48. Andy Pitts hit 63 as leaders Portsmouth brushed aside Lymington by five wickets - the New Forest club always being up against it after early breakthroughs by Pete Hayward and Dean Oliffe. Neil Trestrail (26) and Dave Griffiths (25) rallied, but with former Hampshire left-arm spinner Raj Maru conceding a mere nine runs from his 12 overs, Lymington struggled to reach 136-7. Phil Pineo grabbed three Portsmouth wickets, but was unable to deny Pitts his match-winning role. Nigel leBas emerged from his sick bed to hit 50 and with support from Lee Wateridge (43) saw Trojans to 222-8 at Liphook and Ripsley. But led by a nap hand return by Duncan Berry (5-44), Liphook remained in charge, with Jeremy Bulled (59 not out) and Steve Riley (40) guiding their side to 223-6 and a four wicket win.
