Belize season reaches halfway stage
The first round of the Belize National Cricket Competition was concluded on April 2, 2000. In Zone One, Tropical Disturbance Cricket Club, led by Howell Gillett and Bert Faux, has emerged undefeated (6W;0L) and has a comfortable lead over Brilliant Cricket Club, which is in second place with 4W, 1L, and 1D. In Zone Two, the standing is very different. Four teams are tied up for first place. They are: Berlan, Surprise, Sunrise and Excelsior. Each of these teams has win 4 games and lost 2. Surprise is the defending Sub-champion but Berlan has aquired several new players and has indicated their intention to take the championship this year. The only problem is that the other three teams have the same intention. This will be intresting! The second half of the competition begins on April 8 and ends on May 27, 2000, immediately after which the play offs will begin. For the play offs, the first place team from Zone One will play the secon place team from Zone Two and the first place team from Zone Two will meet the second place team from Zone One. The two winners that will emerge will then play a three-game series to decide the championship. In other cricket news, Berlan Cricket Club will host Florida International Cricket Club of the USA in Belize from 25-29 May, 2000. Berlan will play a match against the visiting team on the 27th, and a Belizean selection will play them on the 28th. It is expected that Berlan will make a visit to USA to do battle against Florida International Cricket Club at a later date. Berlan Cricket Club hereby extends an invitation to any other team to visit Belize to play some friendly matches. They must only remember one thing: we are better at drinking beers than playing cricket! But do not underestimate us either. They may contact me by e-mail at: juniorbest@btl.net Incidentally, any visiting team can treat their visit to Belize as a vacation since Belize is well known as a haven for tourists. The best time to visit is January to May when the Caribbean weather is at its best. © 2000 CricInfo Ltd
