West Indies Local Cricket: Maple find winning touch Haydn Gill - 6 September 1999
YMPC (159 & 163-9 decl'd) lost to Maple (120 & 205-7) by three wickets As Mount Gay Maple set out for a third successive run chase, Pedro Agard said the law of averages dictated that they would eventually have to win at some time. With the first one having ended in defeat and the second finishing in a nail-biting draw, Agard knew that yesterday was going to be Maple's day. The experienced all-rounder would have been very upset with himself in the last series against St. Catherine when he attempted a wild swing and was bowled for 21 in the final over. Maple fell short by just four runs then, but this time Agard made sure he was there at the end when his team completed their first victory of the season. When he went out to join captain Andy Payne, the match was delicately poised with Maple on 154 for six and still requiring another 49 runs with ample overs remaining. Agard chose to attack and he did so effectively, hitting two leg-side fours and another three threes to be unbeaten on 22 when the target was reached. It was a deserved comeback win for Maple who were led on first innings by 39 runs. They might have been surprised that YMPC declared first thing, giving them the entire day to score at a rate of less than 3-1/2 runs an over. Jefferson Gibbons and Pedro DePeiza provided early encouragement in a second-wicket partnership of 57 and after Ryan Hurley's brisk innings, it was left to the steady Payne to guide the middle order.
