2nd ODI: India v Zimbabwe, Statistical highlights
Rajneesh Gupta - 6 September 1999
- It was the 26th match between the two sides.
The record now reads : India 19,Zimbabwe 5,tied 2.
- It was the 116th match in the year 1999 - second most no.
of matches played in a year.115 matches were played in 1997.
However the record of most matches in a year is 127 in 1996.
- Both Darrel Hair and Rudi Koertzen were officiating in
their 53rd match.
- Andy Whittall was playing his 50th match. He became ninth
Zimbabwean and 207th player in the world to do so.
- India's run-rate (8.16) is the third highest by a side in
an innings after India's 8.80 (132-1 in 15 overs against
Bangladesh at Colombo SSC on 24 July 1997) and WestIndies'
8.33 (111 for 2 in 13.2 overs against Australia at Sydney
on 18 January 1989).
- It is,however,the highest in a more than 30 over game.The
previous best was SriLanka's 7.96 (398 for 5 in 50 overs
against Kenya at Kandy on 06 March 1996).
- Sachin Tendulkar made a fifty plus score for the 67th time
in his career (including 23 hundreds). He thus equalled
SriLanka's Aravinda DeSilva's tally of 67 (11+56) fifty
plus scores.Now only Desmond Haynes,with 74 (17+57) fifty
plus scores,is ahead of Tendulkar.
- Ajay Jadeja became fourth Indian to hit six sixes in an
innings after Sachin Tendulkar (twice),Kapil Dev and Saurav Ganguly.
- The third wicket partnership of 143 runs between Tendulkar
and Jadeja is India's best for this wicket against Zim-
babwe. This obliterates the unbroken 104 runs partnership
between Vinod Kambli and Ajay Sharma at Pune on 25 March
1993.
- It was the ninth century partnership between this pair
(Tendulkar and Jadeja). Now only Gordon Greenidge and Desmond
Haynes (15) and Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly
(10) have been involved in more century stands than this
pair (Desmond Haynes and Richie Richardson also have
been involved together in nine century stands.
- Indian batsmen hit as many as 11 sixes in the innings- a
new Indian record. On two previous occasions nine sixes
were hit by Indian batsmen in an innings (v Zimbabwe,
Sharjah,13 Nov 1998 and v SriLanka,Taunton,26 May 1999).
- Neil Johnson,by taking two catches in the match, equalled
the existing Zimbabwean record of most catches by a
fielder in a match against India. It was tenth such
instance for Zimbabwe against India.
- Alistair Campbell,on 17,completed 2000 runs in his role
as Zimbabwe's captain. He was playing his 70th match and
68th innings.Campbell became first Zimbabwean and ninth
player to do so.
- With his two wickets in the match,Anil Kumble became the
leading wicket taker against Zimbabwe. He has now a tally
of 30 wickets from 18 matches against Zimbabwe. He was
previously at level with fellow countryman Javagal Srinath
who has 28 wickets from 16 matches on his name.Interes-
tingly India's Sachin Tendulkar holds the record of scoring
most runs against Zimbabwe- 864 in 21 matches.
- By conceding 20 runs in his only over,Grant Flower now
holds the dubious distinction of conceding most runs in
one over spell for Zimbabwe.Alistair Campbell had given
away 14 runs in his only over against SriLanka at Colombo
SSC on 26 January 1998.
- Craig Evans' figures (5-0-50-1) are the second most expensive
by a Zimbabwean in a five over spell.The record,however,
is held by Guy Whittall (5-0-52-1,v Australia,Delhi,
11 Apr 1998).
- Sachin Tendulkar won MoM award for the 34th time in his
career.
