Windies to tour Kenya next year 23 October 1999
The West Indies will tour Kenya in September next year as a prelude to the second ICC Knock-out Tournament, scheduled in Nairobi from October 3-15, 2000, the Nation newspaper of Kenya reported yesterday. The Windies would arrive in Kenya in mid-September, shortly after their sumnmer tour of England, to play a number of matches against the Kenyan national team, the paper said. It added that Australia and England would be invited to join Kenya and the West Indies in a series of One-Day Internationals leading up to the ICC Knock-out that involves all nine Test teams along with Kenya and Bangladesh. The West Indies Cricket Board is also understood to have agreed to further tours of Kenya in 2001 and 2002. The West Indies’ only previous match against the East African country was in the 1996 World Cup in India. It resulted in one of the most startling upsets in the game’s history. The trip to Kenya would mean the West Indies would be committed to non-stop international cricket between December and April, 2001. They tour New Zealand in December and January, take on Zimbabwe and Pakistan in Tests and One-Day Internationals at home next March through May, go to England in the summer for a full tour of five Tests and a three-way series of One-Day matches, also involving Zimbabwe, head for Kenya and then go on to Australia for a tour of five Tests and the annual World Series. They return from Australia in February, 2001, to meet South Africa in a series of five Tests and one-day internationals.
