The Barbados Nation Numbers speak
23 October 1999

The unreliability of the West Indies batting, the continuing reliability of Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose and the remarkable six-hitting powers of Ricardo Powell are the main features of the team’s combined statistics from recent one-day international series in Singapore, Toronto, Dhaka and Sharjah.

Jimmy Adams, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Powell are the only batsmen to average over 30 an innings and Walsh, Ambrose and Corey Collymore the only bowlers to concede under fours runs an over.

Powell, the powerful 20-year-old Jamaican, counted 31 sixes and 29 fours, in his 15 innings that brought him 460 runs, the highest by any West Indian over the four tournaments. His strike rate was 108.23 per 100 balls.

Several figures emphasise the overall inconsistency of the batting.

Chanderpaul’s 32.41 average is boosted by two unbeaten innings of 77 and 92 against international fledglings, Bangladesh. Captain Brian Lara scored 117 of his 432 runs in one match against Bang-ladesh.

Eight of Powell’s sixes were in his 124 off 93 balls in the final of the Coca-Cola Challenge against India in Singapore and 19 overall in five matches against the Indians in Singapore and Toronto. He managed only 50 runs and two sixes in five innings against Pakistan.

The Jamaican left-hander, Wavell Hinds, in his first appearance in One-Day Internationals, was the most dependable of the West Indies batsmen, passing 25 six times in his 10 innings with two half-centuries for an average of 27.7. He also scored 70 in the only first-class match on tour, against Bangladesh.

Merv Dillon, 19, and Reon King, 13, were the leading wicket-takers but also delivered the most wides 39 by Dillon from his 124 overs, 35 by King from his 84.

Eight times in their 15 innings the West Indies were bowled out for under 200, and four times under 150. They only passed 250 in their two matches against Bangladesh.
