Six of the 13 Minor Counties sides involved in the first round of the 1999 NatWe st Trophy progressed through to the next stage. Cumberland and Wales both saw of f fellow Minor Counties teams in Cornwall and Lincolnshire, while the other four all beat first-class recreational board XIs. It means there are 13 Minor Counties teams in the second round, all of whom will be chasing a place amongst the 18 first-class counties, who come into this season's revamped competition at the third round stage. Pick of the first round wins belonged to Wales and Cumberland. At Sleaford, Wales recovered from 72 for five to overhaul Lincolnshire's 232 for nine on 236 for six with 15 balls in hand. Cumberland piled up 314 for eight against Cornwall at Netherfield Ashley Metcalfe hitting 138 - and then dismissed Cornwall for 177.

Other century makers were Suffolk's Glucka Wijesuriya (109 not out in the defeat by Hampshire) and Andy Griffin (121 in Hertfordshire's win over Leicestershire) . The day's bowling honours went to Bedfordshire leg-spinner Andy Roberts, who t ook five for 28 in the victory over Huntingdonshire - including four wickets in 12 balls - and Berkshire's South African recruit Billy Stelling, whose three for 18 off 10 overs laid the foundations for victory over Warwickshire.
