  • Graham Thorpe became only the second Englishman to take three catches as a fieldsman on two separate occasions after Neil Fairbrother. Overall it was 12th instance of an Englishman taking three cathces in a match in the field.
  • Thorpe also equalled the existing world cup record of most catches by a fieldsman in a match. The others to held three cathces in a match are WestIndian Clive Lloyd (v SriLanka, Manchester, 07-06- 1975), Englishman Dermot Reeve (v Pakistan, Adelaide, 01-03-1992), Pakistani Ijaz Ahmed (v Australia, Perth, 11-03-1992), Australian Allan Border (v Zimbabwe, Hobart, 14-03-1992) and NewZealander Chris Cairns (v UAE, Faisalabad, 27-02-1996).
  • Arjuna Ranatunga was making his 26th World Cup appearance. He thus equalled India's Kapil Dev's tally. Now only two Pakistanis Javed Miandad (33) and Imran Khan (28) have played more World Cup matches than Ranatunga.

  • This was also Ranatunga's fifth World Cup (his first was 1983 World Cup). He became only third player after Pakistanis Javed Miandad and Imran Khan to play in five World Cups. Miandad, incidentally, is the only player to have played in six World Cups (from 1975 to 1996)
  • Ranatunga faced his first defeat as Sri Lanka's captain in seventh World Cup match.
  • The second wicket partnership of 125 runs between Stewart and Hick is England's best for this wicket against Sri Lanka. This obliterates the 75 runs partnership between Nick Knight and Hick at Adelaide on 23-01-1999.
