The Barbados Nation Barbados Clubs: Hurley starts with ton
David Hinds at Queen's Park - 23 May 1999

Spartan 324-9 declared; Maple 261-7.

Ryan Hurley, who missed much of last season, gave a reminder of his bountiful talent by scoring a century in his first knock for his new club, Mount Gay Maple.

A steady 104 not out by Hurley cancelled all hopes of an early Spartan victory as they finished the day in a good position.

Spartan declared on their overnight total of 324-9 and were seemingly set on scything through the Maple batting as they had them on the ropes at 49-3.

However, Pedro Depeiza and Hurley came together and lit up the Queen's Park ground with a fourth wicket stand of 186 runs to take the spark out of Spartan.

Maple, however, allowed the Parkites back into the game as they faltered from 205 for four to 248 for seven, losing three wickets for three runs in the process.

Depeiza set the pace in his knock of 77 which lasted for 194 minutes, 137 balls and 12 boundaries.

Hurley made his intentions clear from the start of his innings as he heaved two mighty sixes off left-armer Sulieman Benn before the tea interval.

He continued in the same attacking form after the break against an attack clearly missing legspinner Dave Marshall.

Benn had a hard day in his first outing for the Spartan club as he dropped Hurley when he was on 35 and this proved to be a costly mistake by the tall, lanky spinner.

The 100 partnership between the fourth-wicket pair came up in the 37th over and things were looking brown for Spartan until Benn broke through.

Hurley's innings has so far lasted 163 minutes and 144 balls with 11 fours and two sixes.
