Defending champions BRC advanced to the second round of the Barbados Fire & Commercial Shield competition with an easy four-wicket victory over The Lodge School at Content yesterday.

BRC dismissed the schoolboys for 141 off 39.1 overs and then took just 21 overs to cruise to victory.

Desmond Grant, the physical trainer of the champion Barbados Busta Cup team, took three wickets for 24 runs with the new ball, while left-arm spinner Anderson Campbell snapped up three for 27.

Jeffrey Small, with four boundaries in a knock of 24, paved for the home team's reply, adding 30 for the first wicket with Michael Hinds.

Former Barbados player Arnold Gilkes chipped in with an unbeaten 21.

In Lodge's innings, opener Rohan Thompson topscored with 31, while leg-spinner Kayode Pantophlet took four for 53 when the schoolboys fielded.

Last year's losing finalists Wotton crashed out after losing by seven wickets to former champions Oran Bristol.

Wotton, batting first after winning the toss, managed only 141 in 33.2 overs. Grantley Best topscored with 51, while fast bowler Mark Small captured five for 21.

Bristol, lifted by an undefeated 49 from Michael Shepherd, won with 14 overs to spare.

The biggest upset of the day was at Dover where the home team lost to Cable & Wireless Bartel Prison Officers by 13 runs.

Prison Officers, defending a total of 160 for eight, dismissed star-studded Dover for 147.

Trevor Browne, a brother of Barbados wicket-keeper Courtney Browne, enjoyed a good all-round match in which he scored 28 not out and took three for 33 with his off-breaks.

Former champions Malvern had the day's highest score, amassing 294 for nine in 37. They went on to beat Diamondshire by 78 runs.

Alex Bellamy, of the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme, was the only century-maker, with exactly 100 to set up a victory by 63 runs against Boscobel.
