The Barbados Nation Barbados Clubs: Newton lays down law
The Barbados Nation - 5 May 1999

Marley Vale, spurred on by an inspirational performance by veteran Nigel Newton, have reached the final of the Rudolph “Cappy” Greenidge Knockout Cricket Competition.

Needing 14 runs from the final two overs, Marley Vale scored 12 in the penultimate over and went on to defeat Lynches by five wickets in a semifinal at Bayfield on Sunday.

Lynches, batting first on an easy-paced pitch, got off to a flying start but were later set back by off-spinner Newton with four for 15 and Keith Beckles (two for 10). Their innings closed at 133 for eight off 28 overs.

Ricky Coppin and Kenneth Alleyne both topscored with 27, while Paul Gooding chipped in with 20.

Marley Vale started their reply very sedately but were always chipping away at the target.

Chris Griffith became impatient and was foxed into a mistimed shot that skied to mid-on, while Jason Jordan was foolishly run out for 27.

Newton, with a well-played 25, and Ellis Straughn (10) kept Marley Vale on course for victory. When Newton departed at 125-5, they were almost certain of victory.

Newton was adjudged the Dewars White Label Scotch Whiskey Man Of The Match.

In the other semifinal, star-studded Merricks defeated Windward by six wickets at Lucas Street.

Windward scored 145, with Geoffrey Marshall making 38, Tony Edghill, 22, and Ryan Sugrim and Andrew Straughn, 17 each. Lonelle Hutson took three for 21 and Adrian Brathwaite two for 25.

Merricks easily knocked off the runs for the loss of four wickets. Thelston Payne (49 not out) and Floyd Reifer (40) were the mainstays of the innings.
