New Zealand: Sumner nails cricket title The Christchurch Press - 15 March 1999 Sumner has won the Christchurch senior suburban cricket championship. Sumner has an unassailable 20-point lead in the two-day championship with a round remaining. Sumner's game against Upper Riccarton was abandoned on Saturday at 4pm, Sumner taking first innings points. Belfast, placed second, also took first innings points against Halswell at Sheldon Park. Belfast set Halswell 174 to win but the target was never threatened and the game finished with Halswell 92 for three. The match between Merivale-Papanui and Harewood ended in a draw. Merivale earned first innings points. Richmond Working Men's Club made a gallant effort to try and avoid relegation but it lost outright to New Brighton. Aidan Cawley, of Richmond, scored the only century of the day. He made 108 in his side's 219 for four. Heathcote, which has played in the senior competition previously, is well clear on the points table in senior B. Points: Sumner 100, Belfast 80, Upper Riccarton 62, Halswell and New Brighton 61, Merivale-Papanui 51, Harewood 48, Richmond WMC 22.
