The Jamaica Gleaner Bucknor to stand in World Cup final

West Indian Steve Bucknor and Englishman David Shepherd will umpire the World Cup final at Lord's on June 20.

Organisers said yesterday the third umpire will be Srinivas Venkataraghaven of India and the match referee will be Ranjan Madugalle.

Umpires for the Old Trafford semi-final between Pakistan and New Zealand today will be Darrell Hair (Australia) and Peter Willey (England).

Shepherd and Venkataraghaven will umpire the second semi-final between Australia and South Africa at Edgbaston tomorrow.

Meanwhile a group of twelve Jamaican umpires will leave the island on Saturday to attend the 19th biennial convention of the West Indies Cricket Umpires Association (WICUA) to be held in Brooklyn New York from June 20-25.

The United States Umpires Association is hosting the event which will also be attended by Andrew Sealey - executive secretary of the West Indies Board and Chetram Singh - chairman of its umpires sub-committee. Johnny Gayle, Douglas Sang Hue and Ronnie Osbourne will attend in their capacities as executive officers of the WICUA while Vivian Johnson and Vivalyn Latty-Scott will be the local association delegates.

Participants will include umpires from the other fourteen regional associations, Bermuda, the USA and Canada. Election of officers for the ensuing two-year period 1999-2001, the Duckworth/Lewis method of determining run-rate in interrupted one-day matches are on the agenda which is now being finalised by the secretariat which has been based in Jamaica for the past 14 years.
