Today's Umpires The Electronic Telegraph - 20 June 1999 Steve Bucknor He was a World Cup football referee before becoming a first-class cricket umpire in 1987. Never played first-class cricket but officiated in the 1992 and 1996 World Cups. Works as a sports consultant in Montego Bay. Aged 53, and married with six children. David Shepherd Widely viewed as England's leading umpire. Played for Devon and Gloucestershire. Started first-class umpiring in 1981. Joined the Test panel in 1985. He is in his fifth World Cup and took the 1996 final. Awarded MBE for services to cricket in 1997. Aged 58. Single. Third umpire: S Venkataraghavan (India). Match referee: R S Madugalle (Sri Lanka).
