Scotland open the door for Smith Keith Graham - 3 June 1999 Scotland's selectors have wasted no time in rebuilding the squad after the World Cup campaign - the first changes will happen next Wednesday when the 'B' team travel to Durham to begin a three-day match against Durham University's Cricket Centre of Excellence. Wicketkeeper Alec Davies, 36, announced his retirement from international competition immediately after the World Cup, so Aberdeenshire's Colin Smith will be given the chance to stake his claim as first choice behind the wickets. Davies, who made his debut in 1993, and whose best innings probably came during the last two weeks against Bangladesh and New Zealand, will be a hard act to follow but Smith produced impressive all-round performances when Scotland convincingly beat a Nottinghamshire Board XI and Dorset in the NatWest Trophy to set up a third-round of against Surrey later this month. Douglas Lockhart (West of Scotland) will captain the 'B' side and, depending upon George Salmond's future availability, could be in line to lead the senior side too. He also has an opportunity to establish himself as an opening batsman, now that Iain Philip has retired. Other youngsters hoping to press their claims for places in the senior side are Gregor Maiden, Drew Parsons, Martyn Hay, Fraser Watts and Craig Wright.
