Wijetilleke promises to help build up confidence

Sri Lanka's new cricket chief, Rienzie T. Wijetilleke promised to build up the confidence and help the national team to regain their lost prestige after a dismal performance in the World Cup cricket tournament in England.

Wijetilleke who is the Managing Director of the Hatton National Bank was appointed as chairman of the Interim Committee by Sports Minister S.B. Dissanayake to carry out the duties and functions of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka.

Rienzie Wijetilleke said that he would look into the shortcomings of the Sri Lankan team and reassess them quietly and make every effort to reestablish the team in a best possible way. He also hinted that there would be some major changes in the Sri Lankan team during the next few weeks ahead of a tight international calendar.

The Sri Lankan team is scheduled to play nine Tests - three each against Australia, Zimbabwe and Pakistan, during a six month period starting from early September. In addition they will be involved in three one day series' in Sri Lanka, Sharjah and Bangladesh.

The others appointed to the Interim Committee are Michael Tissera (secretary), Sidat Wettimuny (treasurer), Asantha de Mel (member) and S. Skandhakumar (member). The Interim Committee will be assisted by Gihan Siribaddana, B.S. Perera, Anura Weerasinghe, Upali Kumarasiri, Shammi Silva, Jayananda Warnaweera and Kamal Dharmasiri. (C.D)
