Four pacemen for specialised training

The BCCSL has recommended the following bowlers to undergo specialist training at the MRF Foundation in India under Dennis Lillee from June 19 to 27:

Suresh Perera, Sanjeewa Jayaratne, Prabath Nissanka, Shirantha Mendis.

This is part of the ongoing MRF/BCCSL programme to develop Sri Lanka's young fast bowling talent.

Rumesh Ratnayake former Sri Lanka fast bowler in his capacity as the BCCSL specialised coach for fast bowlers will be accompanying the four bowlers.


Chaminda and Duleep maul Matara attack

Chaminda Mendis hit a superb unbeaten double century and shared an opening stand of 373 runs with Duleep Samaraweera (178) as Colts CC declared their first innings at 406 for 1 on the opening day of their Premier championship cricket tournament fixture against Matara SC which began at Havelock Park yesterday.

Mendis hoisted three sixes and struck 24 boundaries while his partner Samaraweera collected his runs with the help of one six and 26 boundaries.

Colts CC: 406 for 1 decl (C. Mendis 200 n.o, D. Samaraweera 178, S. Fernando 14 n.o).

Matara SC: 20 for 1. - (C.D)


Galle CC 209: BRC 43/3

BRC, in reply to Galle CC's first innings total of 209 all out, were 43 for 3 at close on the opening day of their Cricket Board Inter-Club Premier league cricket tournament match begun at Havelock park yesterday.

Right arm fast medium bowler Indika Baddegama was BRC's hero of the day as he bagged five wickets for 57 runs.

Galle CC: 209 all out (R.Karunasena 39, Pasan Wanasinghe 46, H. Rajapakse 23, V.Perera 41, P.Buddika 30, Indika Baddegama 5 for 57, C,Mudalige 2 for 61, D. Madurapperuma 2 for 58).

SSC 296 for 8

Two good half centuries by Upeka Fernando (50) and Tilan Samaraweera helped SSC reach 286 for 8 in their first innings on the opening day of their Premier championship cricket tournament match against Singha SC which began at Maitland Place yesterday.

SSC: 286 for 8 (U. Fernando 50, M. Jayawardena 38, T. Samaraweera 55, S. Silva 34 n.o, N. Soysa 20 n.o, S. Sanjeewa 4 for 73, P. Silva 2 for 52) v Singha SC. - (C.D).


Duminda Perera 111 n.o.

Duminda Perera hit a fine century (111) and helped Bloomfield reach 277 runs in their first on the opening day of their Premier championship cricket tournament match against Police SC played at Police Park yesterday. Chamara Silva returned excellent figures of 5 for 71 for Police SC.

Not a ball bowled Asoka Jayakody Kurunegala

Not a ball was bowled on the opening day of the Premier championship cricket tournament match between Kurunegala YCC and NCC due to a wet outfield at the Welagedera Stadium Kurunegala yesterday.


Postponed Dilwin Mendis Moratuwa

The Premier championship cricket tournament match between Sebastianites SC and Tamil Union was postponed to next week and will be played at the De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa.


Maliyadeva 96-nil Francis Warnakulasooriya

Maliyadeva College Kurunegala defeated Devapathiraja College, Galle by 96 points to nil (3 goals, 15 tries) in their inter-school rugby encounter played on the Maligapitiya Grounds, Kurunegala recently.

The winners led 47-nil at half-time.

Old Zahirians to fete 'Tanker' Hamid

The Old Zahirians Sports Club (Colombo) will felicitate their product T.M. Ibrahim Hamid (Tanker) on his appointment as Chairman Board of Governors of Zahira College, Colombo. He is also the Patron of OZSC.

'Tanker' Hamid is an outstanding sportsman who excelled in rugger represented the College and the Police team. He was a national selector of the Sri Lanka Rugby-Football Union and was the past President and Secretary of the Western Providence Rugby-Football Union. He is the Vice-President and the Chairman of the Rugby-Football section.

The felicitation lunch will be held on Sunday, June 20, at College presided over by the OZSC President Mr. M.F.M. Ismathdeen.
