Herby Jayasuriya's article in your issue of June 7 brought back nostalgic memories of my association with those two fine personalities, Clement Cotilingam and Dyce Duckworth in the Prisons team from the early forties upto the seventies during which period of time we participated in the 'A' to 'D' division in Government Servile tournaments.

Both retired as Prison Superintendents and were both products of S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, where they excelled in cricket, soccer and athletics. As Herby mentioned Clements demise came about in 1973 whilst Dyce Duckworth retired and left for Australia in the mid-seventies, the latter last serving as Superintendent, Negombo Prison. Herby's reference to Dyce having schooled at Wesley is a small mix-up as he apparently talks of another time Wesley cricketer, A.V. Duckworth, who played with distinction for the Treasury with Raju Coomarswamy and others.

Another anecdote worth recalling as a cricketing record is the breaking of stumps on three separate occasions in the same match by that Ceylon fast bowler D.S. Jayawardena on the Tamil Union grounds. The match was the Police vs Prisons 'A' division final about the year 1944 when the Police team included stalwarts like Malcolm Spittel, Joe Misso, Vernon Prins and L.M.P. de Silva.

Our team also included Bertie Wijesinghe (he resigned within an years service), Tom Melder, the Benedictine all-rounder, the two Thomians Clement Dyce among others.

I played for my college team, St. Anthony's Katugastota, for three years in the mid-thirties and thereafter joined the Saracens and played a few matches under Gerry Guneratne.
