Salmond to stay in charge The Electronic Telegraph - 15 June 1999 George Salmond says he wants to lead Scotland at the next World Cup in South Africa in 2003 despite coming close to resigning during the current competition. ``After our final defeat by New Zealand, I really was thinking seriously about packing it all in - but that was just a knee-jerk reaction,'' he said. ``There were a lot of stresses and strains during the World Cup, but when you are captain of your country the positives by far outweigh the negatives.'' Scotland coach Jim Love will, however, have to find a stand-in captain for next week's NatWest Trophy match against Surrey in Edinburgh and the Triple Crown competition in Dublin at the end of the month. Having been away from his blackboard for so long, Salmond cannot take any more time off from his job as a primary teacher at Watson's College. However, expects to be available again for the three-day match against the MCC in Aberdeen next month and for the home series against South Africa A. A SCU President's Select will face Manderston in the Border club's centenary match at Duns today.
