Dawn Commission to resume probe from June 30
The Dawn - 26 June 1999

Karachi, June 25: The judicial commission investigating corruption in Pakistan cricket will resume its investigations later this month. Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum, who heads the one-man committee, has set June 30 as the date of hearing. Former coach Javed Miandad and four bookies have been summoned.

Ali Sibtain Fazli, lawyer of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), told Dawn from Lahore on Friday evening that the four bookies were caught by law enforcing agencies while collecting bets during the World Cup.

``But I will be suggestion the honourable judge to summon the players who are available so that the process of examination can resume,'' Fazli said.

According to information, Javed Miandad is still in England spending holidays.

Fazli stated that the judicial commission investigations would also include the World Cup ``because the inquiry has to be updated.''

The lawyer was optimistic that the commission report would be submitted to President Rafique Tarrar next week.

``Most of the work has already been done. It just have to finalized besides updating it,'' he said.

The judicial commission has todate examined more than 90 witnesses, including current and former players, current and former cricket board officials and bookies.

The last hearing date was fixed as April 28 when the accused and accusers were summoned to cross-examine each other. But the hearing couldn't take place as the Pakistan team left for England on April 27 and a couple of the accusers made themselves unavailable cited family commitments.
