The Electronic Telegraph Jack is the ace in Scotland's plans
Keith Graham - 25 June 1999

Peter Jack, the East Kilbride pace bowler, has been included in Scotland's 13-man squad which travels to Dublin next week to take part in the annual Triple Crown competition.

Jack, 18, impressed the selectors with a good bowling performance in the recent 'B' team games against Durham University.

After exits from both the World Cup and the NatWest Trophy, Scotland's selectors are increasingly looking towards the next generation of cricketers as they prepare for the ICC Trophy in Canada in 2001 and, in Jack, they believe they have someone who could spearhead the bowling in future years.

Also included in the squad is Carlton's Fraser Watts, who made such a good impression with the bat last season. Now at Loughborough University, the young opening batsman can also stake a place for himself in Scotland's international future.

Fellow student Gregor Maiden, of West of Scotland, 12th man in this week's NatWest game, will also get the chance to bid for a place in the spin attack.

Aberdeenshire's Colin Smith, who made such a good impression on his debut against Surrey on Wednesday, retains his place behind the stumps while the batting is bolstered by the inclusion of the uncapped Rennie Keith of Clydesdale.

With work commitments, injuries and holidays restricting choice, only three members of the World Cup squad were available, James Brinkley, Asim Butt and Sheridan. Douglas Lockhart leads the team again.

The Scots face old rivals Ireland at Clontarf on Tuesday and, on Wednesday, they take on the ECB XI at Pembroke before wrapping up the tournament against Wales at the Hills.

Hampshire face Yorkshire in the Benson and Hedges Super Cup today having lost to them three times this season. The competition is exclusively for the top eight in last season's County Championship.
