Dawn People should look at brighter side of team
The Dawn - 25 June 1999

Islamabad, June 24: Chairman PIA Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Chairman Privatisation Commission Khawaja Mohammad Asif have urged the people that instead of getting angry at the Pakistan World Cup cricket team, they should look at the brighter aspects achieved by the relatively inexperienced Pakistan outfit.

The two chairmen in a joint press release on Thursday maintained that Saqlain Mushtaq's hat trick being only the second in the world cup history, record breaking opening wicket stand between Saeed Anwar and Wajahutullah Wasti were few of the highlights to reach the final. The two chairmen stated that in 1996 Pakistan failed to qualify for the semi-finals, therefore the effort put in by players in 1999 World Cup should be appreciated whole-heartedly so that the players can take up the next assignment in Australia with renewed confidence.

The chairmen lashed out at those who claim that the players were involved in match-fixing without any proof. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi urged the people to take both aspects of winning and losing and stated that runners-up in World Cup was no mean achievement. ``We should accept defeat with dignity,'' chairman PIA said.
