The Barbados Nation Barbados Clubs: Griffith steers Pickwick past YMPC
Ancille Inniss - 13 June 1999

YMPC 260-9 dec., ESAF Pickwick 278-2. Match Drawn.

A brilliant unbeaten double century by West Indies opener Adrian Griffith blazed Pickwick past YMPC's big innings score ,yesterday.

Griffith, fresh from a century in the first series, continued his terrific form when he smashed 25 fours and eight sixes, in 219 minutes off 117 balls.

Pickwick, who had a minimum of 45 overs in which to reach first innings points, needed only 32.1 overs to reach their target.

He was very severe on the five hapless bowlers that YMPC captain Roger Coward offered up.

Griffith was hit on the helmet early in his innings by a short delivery from fast bowler Barry Lowe but retaliated by punishing Lowe with four consecutive fours off his second over.

That set the tone for Griffith. His first half century was scored at a run a ball, while his 100 came off 125 balls. Such was his prominance that he dominated stands of 40 for the first wicket with his brother Raymond who made 12, 158 for the second wicket stand with Rondell Yearwood (35) and an unconquered 80 for the third of 80 with Michael Matthews (10).

YMPC bowlers and fielders gave a very disappointing show in defending a healthy total in 45 overs.

The bowlers were too short, they lacked control and purpose and the field placing lacked imagination.

Earlier YMPC resumed their over-week score from 227 for six with Ian Straughn unbeaten on 70 and David Harte 18.

Straughn added only ten before edging off-spinner Wren Miller to slip, while Harte made 21, before YMPC declared.
