Come August 6, the Barbados Cricket League (BCL) will have to look for a new boss.

Thats because long-standing president Owen Estwick announced his intention to resign, during a panel discussion to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Newbury Province club on Monday night.

Estwick, a former Barbados manager and longstanding member of the Barbados Cricket Associations (BCA) board of management, confirmed he would not seek re-election when the league holds its annual general meeting next month.

Speaking to NATIONSPORT yesterday, Estwick said one of his major qualms was the poor performances by the BCL in the Division 1 competition.

BCL, local powerhouses in the 1980s, have suffered badly this decade, and are now seen as whipping boys.

I dont want to speak off the cuff, but what I can tell you is that I plan to serve notice of my resignation to the board of management, said Estwick, who held the top post from 1973-90 and again from 1994 to the present.

He also expressed disappointment that efforts to get a talent-scouting programme going were being continuously frustrated.

Estwick said he would contest the post of second vice-president at the BCAs annual general meeting on July 29.

This would pit him against incumbent Charlie Griffith in a race that is heating up with the battle for leadership between president Tony Marshall and challenger Sir Conrad Hunte.
