Youth Asia Cup starts today

Bangladesh take on Hong Kong today in the first match of the Youth Asia Cup at Kallang Oval in Singapore.

Fahim Muntashir will lead defending champions Bangladesh, who will play their next match against Malaysia on July 6. Their last Group A match is against United Arab Emirates on July 7.

The under-19 tournament, a qualifier for the Youth World Cup 2000 in Sri Lanka, will be played from July 5 to 11 at different venues of Singapore. Eight teams divided into two groups will participate in the meet and the top two finishers will the gate-pass for the Lanka showpiece, scheduled to be held in January next year.

Meanwhile, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Thailand and Nepal are pencilled in to Group B. Top two teams from each group will move for the criss-cross semifinals, beginning on July 9.

In other matches of the day Malaysia will face UAE at the Singapore Recreation

Club, Papua New Guinea fight against Singapore at Ceylon Sports Club and Thailand take on Nepal at Singapore Indian Association.

Kallang Oval, Singapore Recreation Club and Singapore Cricket Club have turf wickets, while Singapore Indian Association and Ceylon Sports Club have astro turf.

The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka has been the driving force for this tournament in their endeavour to raise the standards in the Asian region.

The Board has nominated the following officials as match referees and umpires for the Youth Asia Cup in Singapore: Match Referees Asantha de Mel, Amal Silva. Umpires: Asoka de Silva, Gamini de Silva, L. V. Jayasundera and T. H. Wijewardene.
