Cronje says whitewash will be difficult
AFP
6 January 1999
CAPE TOWN, Jan 6 (AFP) - South African captain Hansie Cronje only
allowed himself to start thinking of a series whitewash after his team
won the fourth of five Tests against the West Indies Wednesday.
``I've been taking it one match at a time,'' he said. ``I didn't expect
to win four in a row. There is still a lot of hard work ahead.
``Our bowlers are getting more tired and it will be important for
everyone to arrive at Centurion Park feeling fresh if we are to win
all five.''
The fifth Test starts at Centurion on January 15. South Africa named
an unchanged squad of 12 after their 149-run win.
Allan Donald, who did not bowl in the second innings at Newlands
because of a strained left hamstring, will have to pass a fitness
test. Lance Klusener is standing by if he is unable to turn out.
Selection convenor Peter Pollock said four players had been ordered to
rest from domestic matches this weekend. They are Donald, Shaun
Pollock, Jacques Kallis and Cronje.
West Indian captain Brian Lara said the lower order batsmen had shown
the resolve needed by the top batsmen as they took the side from 93
for six to 271 all out Wednesday.
``If the top order batsmen had done better we wouldn't be 4-0 down in
the series,'' he said.
Lara said the West Indies would not give up. ``We still have another
Test match, seven one-day matches and then a very important Test
series against Australia,'' he said.
West Indian manager Clive Lloyd, who was captain when West Indies last
lost four successive matches in a series at the beginning of what
became a successful captaincy career, said: ``We have been beaten by a
better team.''
Lloyd said the fight shown by the lower order batsmen Wednesday needed
to be repeated. ``There is a lot more cricket to play, leading up to
the World Cup in England in May and June.''
The South African squad for the fifth Test at Centurion from January
15 to 19 is:
Hansie Cronje (captain), Gary Kirsten, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques
Kallis, Daryll Cullinan, Jonty Rhodes, Shaun Pollock, Mark Boucher,
Allan Donald, David Terbrugge, Paul Adams, Lance Klusener.
