One of Sri Lanka's newest television channels, Swarnavahini announced that they had acquired the telecast rights for the two principal events in the sporting television calendar - the Rugby World Cup and the Cricket World Cup.

Barely one year in operation Swarnavahini has rapidly reached the pinnacle of the television industry with an exceptional line up of local language and English programmes, in addition to a plethora of live telecasts.

The Wimbeldon Tennis Championships, The Cricket Mini World Cup, the 1998 Miss World Pageant and the Sharjah Champions Trophy are among the exceptional array of international events presented 'live' to viewers in 1998.

According to company sources, the World Cup of Cricket will be telecast live between May 14 to June 20 and the Rugby World Cup between October 1 to November 6, 1999.

This is a major success for the popular Swarnavahini channel as it is the first time the Cricket World Cup is being televised by a private television station.

All this adds up to the best of news for the cricket loving public as Swarnavahini assures us we will see each match in its entirety - ``live and uninterrupted''.

If the beginning is anything to go by viewers are in for an exciting year of television.
