Thurstan hit back

Thurstan College after being reduced to 178 for 9 in their first innings, hit back strongly to have their opponents Nalanda struggling at 60 for 5 on the opening day of their inter school cricket encounter which began at NCC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

Skipper Arjuna Dayananda made a top score of 88 for the Thurstanites and received good support from C.Aravinda and N.Gamage.

Thurstan: 178 for 9 decl (A.Dayananda 88, C.Aravinda 29, N.Gamage 23, D.Jayasundera 3 for 19, S.Perera 2 for 22, B.Ranaweera 2 for 26)

Nalanda: 60 for 5 (N.Porage 15, B.Ranaweera 2 for 26, T.Perera 2 for 23) D.W.

A captain's knock

A captain's knock of 74 by Thushan Amarasuriya helped Royal declare their first innings at 218 for 5 on the opening day of their interschool cricket encounter against Dharmaraja which began at Reid Avenue yesterday.

In reply the visitors were struggling at 76 for 5 at close. The match will be continued at 10.00 a.m today.

A fine spell of bowling by S.Mendis (7 for 21) highlighted the drawn inter school cricket encounter between St. Anne's College and Mahinda College concluded at Kurunegala yesterday.

St. Anne's: 82 (C.Tissera 34, R. Perera 14, G. Liyanage 3 for 22, T. Rupasinghe 2 for 9, B. K. Sumith 3 for 11) and 112 (S. Mendis 22, A. Isurendra 31, S. Isuru 3 for 9, P. Kumara 3 for 22)

Mahinda: 93 (P. Kumara 45, S. Mendis 7 for 21) and 66 for 5 (T. Rupasinghe 41, C. Abeyratne 2 for 10)

Cambrians draw with Wesley

Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa drew with Wesley College, Colombo in their second eleven cricket match played at Moratuwa recently. Wesley batting first made 119 runs. Cambrians replied with 154 runs. Dilum Fernando top scored with an unbeaten 77. Weslyites in their second innings were 110 runs for the loss of four wickets with T. Pieris scoring a half century.

Wesley College 119 (T. Peiris 38, N. Perera 22, Kamal Suranga 5/42 and 110/4, T. Pieris 50)

Prince of Wales 154 (Dilum Fernando 77 not out, Kamal Suranga 22, Lakmal Pieris 21, T. Sumathipala 6/51).

Drawn game

A fine spell of bowling by St. Anthony's College skipper Samith Lasantha who captured 7 wickets for 49 and superb half century from J. Sivanesarajan 80 were the highlights of the inter-school cricket match between St. Anthony's College, Wattala and Sri Jayewardenepura Maha Vidyalaya which ended in a draw at Aturugiriya on Tuesday.

Scores:

St. Anthony's College all out 239 (J. Sivanesarajan 80, Ranil Cooray 49, R. Ariveinthan 35, Samith Lasantha 24, Shaminda Perera 22, Lakmal 4 for 35.) and 203 for 9 at close ( Ruwan Perera 46, R. Ariveinthan 40, J. Sivanesarajan 37).

Sri Jayewardenepura MV all out 207 ( Varuna Silva 72, Samith Lasantha 7 for 49, Dasika Vitharana 2 for 119).
