Reserve umpires for BCCSL matches

It has been highlighted in the Press that due to the absence of an Umpire the match had come to an abrupt end on Sunday 3rd January 1999 at Galle International Stadium. The fact was, one of the officiating Umpires received a message that his daughter had got seriously ill and had been rushed to hospital in Colombo. On receiving the message the said Umpire had left for Colombo, after informing both Captains and the Chairman, Umpires Committee. The Assignment Officer had arranged one of the Reserve Umpires who was at BCCSL Headquarters to travel to Galle and officiate. By the time he reached Galle due to heavy rain play had been called off for the day.

Reserve Umpires are normally stationed at the Board headquarters. BCCSL has now decided that from this week onwards to station a Reserve Umpire in each Region when BCCSL conducted tournaments are in progress in order to avoid similar instances, states a press release by Dammika Ranatunga, chief Executive of BCCSL.
