Jan 20, 1000 GMT: Ricky Ponting has been suspended from the Australian cricket team for disciplinary reasons till further notice.
The action was announced by ACB chief executive Mal Speed at a press conference in Hobart at 7.30pm local time Wednesday.
Ponting was suspended pending investigation into an incident in which he was
knocked unconscious in a Sydney nightclub early on Monday morning. Ponting
attended the press conference sporting a black eye, and said, reading a
prepared statement, that he admitted to having an alcohol problem.
It is expected that he will be charged with a breach of the ACB's Code of Conduct following the investigation of the incident.
Ponting was due to play for Australia in a one-day game against Sri Lanka
at Bellerive Oval, Hobart tomorrow. A replacement has not been announced
at this stage.
