Expect more from Australia's batsmen, promises Warne

12 January 1999
SYDNEY, Jan 12 (AFP) - Acting Australian captain Shane Warne has
promised an improved performance from his top-order batsmen in the
one-day cricket match against Sri Lanka here Wednesday, part of the
triangular series.
Australia lost the series opener to England by seven runs in Brisbane
on Sunday, collapsing to 48 for five while chasing a rain-reduced 153
runs off 36 overs.
Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn and Greg Blewett - no longer in the Test
team and anxious to figure in the World Cup in England in May - were
knocked over cheaply by England's fired-up bowlers.
The rescue mission was left to Michael Bevan, whose unbeaten 56 was
not enough.
Warne, captaining the side in place of an injured Steve Waugh,
marshalled his players skilfully in the field to restrict England to
178 for eight but it all fell apart within 12 overs.
``In Brisbane I thought we bowled and fielded as good as I can remember
but we didn't bat well,'' Warne said Tuesday.
``We've had a couple of meetings and talked about it a fair bit. I'm
sure there'll be a different attitude in this game.
``Complacency's one thing we did talk about. We were 1-40 off seven
overs and should have cruised home.''
With Waugh still out with a torn hamstring Bevan may be promoted to
number four in the batting order where he hit 530 runs at 88.33 in 10
one-dayers in India and Sharjah early last year.
``Bevo's the best finisher in the game,'' said Warne.
``I'm a bit flexible but I'd like Bevo to finish our innings and
generally get 60 off 60 balls or more. He's the difference between
getting 180 and 220.''
Lefthander Darren Lehmann Tuesday declared himself recovered from a
hamstring strain.
Sri Lanka also lost to England in Brisbane on Monday, managing only
207 for seven from their 50 overs.
The World Cup champions are also looking for more runs, but from the
lower order rather than the top.
``Our bottom half hasn't been making the type of runs they are capable
of and that is something we are working on,'' said manager Ranjith
Fernando.
``Hopefully by the end of the tour they will produce something which
would gives us totals of around 230 or 240, which is the sort of
totals we are looking for on these pitches.''
