Lanka favourites to win International women's cricket tourney

Sri Lanka goes out favourites to win the International Women's Cricket Tournament 1999 organised by the A.P. Women's Cricket Association in collaboration with the Women's Cricket Association of India. The participating countries in these silver jubilee celebrations are Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India who are all members of the International Women's Cricket Council in this triangular series where the Lanka Women's XI is led by Rasanjali de Silva. They leave on January 24 and are scheduled to play seven 50-over internationals.

The itinerary is as follows:

27.1.99: India vs Pakistan (Lucknow, K. D. Singe Stadium)

29.1.99: India vs Sri Lanka (Kanpur, Green Park)

31.1.99: India vs Sri Lanka (Agra Stadium)

2.2.99: India vs Pakistan (Muzzafar-Nagar Stadium)

4.2.99: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka (Bereilly Stadium)

6.2.99: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka (Lucknow Stadium)

8.2.99: Finals (Lucknow Stadium)

The team will return on February 9 and will immediately start practice for the Dutch women's tour beginning in March. They will play seven one-day internationals of which one will be a day/night match. The Lanka women's XI is also negotiating a tour to Bangladesh towards the end of the year.

The President of the Women's Cricket Association of Sri Lanka, Mrs. Gwen Herat said that she is very keen on exposing the team to international competition in preparation for the Women's World Cup 2000 for which Sri Lanka has already qualified.

The team: Rasanjali de Silva (captain), Vasanthi Ratnayake (vice-captain), Sudarshini Sivanathan, Kalpana Liyanaarachchi, Hiruka Fernando, Rose Fernando, Gayathri Kariyawasam, Chamani Seneviratne, Dedunu Gunaratne, Ramani Perera, Thanuja Ekanayake, Chandrika Lakmali, Himali Samarajeewa, Champa Sugathadasa.

Reserves: Nirupa Abeyawickrema, Niluka Priyadarshini, Nilushika Udayangani.
