Handsome tribute to Sri Lanka The Daily News - 12 February 1999 Kent Young Cricketers manager Maurice Thunder has paid a handsome tribute to the standard of cricket and the umpires on their recent cricket tour to Sri Lanka. ``I must say all the teams we played against made us very welcome, and I was very impressed with the standard of cricket in Sri Lanka. I must also mention the umpires - the standard was very high, much better than we get here'', said Thunder in a letter to tour promoter Errol Seneviratne. ``I must tell you that all the boys and adults really enjoyed our visit to Sri Lanka, both for the cricket and the tourist aspect. I believe all our players have learned a lot and really benefitted as cricketers, which was the major aim. ``What a pleasure to be in a country where cricket is regarded as the major sport; what a lot of talented youngsters we saw. I can only hope that resources are available to help them progress in the game,'' wrote Thunder. One sad note of the tour was that the tourists had to pocket out Rs. 9000 as expenditure for their two day match against the Matara Young Cricketers at Matara, which was in cricketing parlance - 'just not cricket'. At least the Cricket Board's Regional committee should have seen to it that the match was properly sponsored.
