Sri Lanka Schools: Peiris bowls Peterites to 8-wicket win
Richard Dwight - 28 February 1999

Lemonade Trophy table leaders St. Peter's having beaten Royal earlier, pulled off a relatively easy victory against S. Thomas' by 8 wickets with two hours to spare, to register their fifth win for the season at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

This Peterite triumph over S. Thomas' comes after a lapse of eight years, having beaten them last in 1991.

St. Peter's did well to declare with their overnight score of 124 for 8 in reply to S. Thomas' first innings total of 76 for 9. S. Thomas' having to erase a first innings deficit of 48 runs, put up yet another poor batting display against the wily spin of Chryshantha Peiris (4/44) and Kaushal Lokuarachchi (3/2) to be all out for 122, made off 65 overs and 222 minutes.

The only resistance from the Thomians came from skipper Naren Ratwatte who made 39.

The diminutive little left-arm Peterite spinner Peiris proved to be the match winner having taken 5 wickets for 12 runs in the first innings, to have a match bag of 9 wickets for 56 runs, and a tally of 51 wickets for the season so far.

The Peterites made short work of their victory target of 75 runs, achieving it for the loss of two wickets with opener Angelo Fonseka making 45 not out.

Scores:

S. Thomas' 76 for 9 dec and 122 (N. Ratwatte 39, G. A. Fernando 17, C. Peiris 4 for 44, K. Lokuarachchi 3 for 2, D. Rupasinghe 2 for 26).

St. Peter's 124 for 8 declared and 75 for 2 (A. Fonseka 45 n.o., J. Jayasuriya 14, G. Fernando 2 for 17).
