New Zealand: Century fails to save Easts The Christchurch Press - 22 February 1999 A splendid century by Tori Little, 17, could not prevent her East-Shirley team losing outright to St Albans Gold in the Canterbury women's cricket competition. St Albans Gold joined South Canterbury at the top of the WestpacTrust Trophy points table. After a dismal performance in its first innings on Saturday, East-Shirley had been forced to follow on with a deficit of 246 runs. A resolute Little revitalised the East innings when it was tottering at 74 for four. She shared a 100-run fifth-wicket partnership with her twin, Jess, who made 42. With straight driving a feature of her innings, Tori Little stroked 15 boundaries before raising her century with a push to mid-off. Valuable contributions also came at the top of the order from Anna Wilkins and from No. 8 Carolyn Aberhart, who mixed stout resistance with fluent drives in getting to 39 not out. East was dismissed for 298, with Carolyn Solomens and Sarah Burke picking up three wickets each. St Albans openers Maartje Koster and Kylie O'Loughlin soon scored the 53 runs needed to win. At Garrick Park, Marist failed by three runs to avoid the follow on against Lancaster Park-Woolston. Resuming at 89 for four in reply to LPW's 257, Marist got close to that goal thanks to a well-compiled 74 by Anna Smith. Paula Flannery's leg-spinners did most of the damage. Scoring at about three runs an over, the Marist top order batted its way out of trouble in the second innings. Delwyn Brownlee reached 39 and fellow opener Smith 35, before Erin Kelly, who went on to make 82, and Natalie Fraser shared a 79-run stand for the third wicket. Their combined efforts had Marist 201 for four and safe from outright loss at stumps. Points: St Albans Gold 21, South Canterbury 21, St Albans Blue 17, LPW 8, Marist 6, East-Shirley 5.
