The Christchurch Press Shell Trophy: Second spinner in Canty team
The Christchurch Press - 26 February 1999

Canterbury has brought in a second specialist spinner, Carl Anderson, for its third round Shell Trophy cricket match against Auckland at Rangiora's Dudley Park starting tomorrow.

Anderson's inclusion for all-rounder Hamish Barton is the only change from the 12 for the opening two games.

Canterbury coach Garry MacDonald said it was felt the wicket would probably take spin and the selectors felt Anderson, who played for Canterbury last season, was the best option.

MacDonald said Barton, an off-spinner, had been a little inconsistent while Anderson has performed well at club level.

In comparison, the Auckland side has several changes with Stephen Lynch returning while under 19 players Reece Young and off-spinner Tim Lythe have been added.

Young will keep wicket replacing Jason Mills who has been forced to retire with a debilitating back injury. Out from its last round match are Ian Billcliff, Richard Morgan, and Kyle Mills, the latter giving way to pace bowler Chris Drum who is fit again.

Canterbury: Gary Stead (captain), Craig Cumming, Brad Doody, Llorne Howell, Gareth Hopkins, Scott Pawson, Mark Priest, Warren Wisneski, Shane Bond, Stephen Cunis, Chris Martin, Carl Anderson.

Auckland: Blair Pocock (captain), Bryan Young, Stephen Lynch, Lou Vincent, Richard King, Aaron Barnes, Brooke Walker, Reece Young, Kerry Walmsley, Mark Haslam, Chris Drum, Tim Lythe.
