The Barbados Nation Trini bat leading Busta averages
Haydn Gill - 4 February 1999

A little-known Trinidadian heads the Busta Cup batting averages after the third round of matches.

Denis Rampersad, a 23-year-old with a handful of first-class matches prior to the start of the season, is averaging 79.66 per innings and is yet to be dismissed for a score of less than 40.

His 239 runs, the second most, include scores of 81 against Guyana and 84 against Jamaica.

Rampersad stamped his authority at youth level and was the leading run-scorer in the 1994 Nortel Youth Championship in Barbados.

Back then, his 370 runs (ave. 61.66) in five matches made him the tournament's leading run-scorer and earned him a place in the West Indies Youth team that played against England in 1995.

Seasoned Leeward Islands left-arm spinner Warrington Phillip is leading the bowling averages after playing in one match.

The 30-year-old Nevisian had a match-haul of 10 wickets - one of six such instances in the championship - in the third round match against the Windward Islands. Those wickets were taken at 10.60 runs apiece.

Phillip is slightly ahead in the averages, but Barbados' Winston Reid is by far the highest wicket-taker. His 26 wickets include the tournament's best innings haul (eight for 77) and were captured at 10.69 runs each.

The fast bowler with the most wickets is tall 21-year-old Jamaican Dwight Mais, who has 13 wickets in his first season at first-class level.

Leeward Islands' Dave Joseph is the tournament's top run-scorer in spite of bagging a pair in the last match. His 247 runs (ave. 41.16) have come mainly from a century and two half-centuries.

Joseph's 101 against Barbados is one of only three centuries in the nine matches. The others came from Barbados opener Sherwin Campbell, who is second in the averages, and Jamaican Wavell Hinds.
