WI local: Conrad Hunte in Dover’s way Louis Linton - 18 December 1999
Defending champions Piton Dover will be after their fourth consecutive Intermediate title when they take on Carib Beer Conrad Hunte in the four-day final starting at the James Bryan Complex today. Dover, who could be labelled as the kings of Intermediate cricket, were given an easy passage after Wotton walked off, conceding defeat in the semifinal. Conrad Hunte, the Barbados Fire and Commercial Shield champs, are looking forward to capturing another title in honour of their patron, the late Sir Conrad Hunte. Dover are a balanced and experienced team with seven players with Division 1 experience including captain Vibert Greene, a former Barbados all-rounder. Greene, who will be spearheading the bowling attack, has taken 41 wickets this season. "We are confident. We are not worried about our opponents at this time. This game will be taken like any other game,” he said. Support in the bowling department will come from the Kirton brothers, Jerry and Litchfield, both with over 40 scalps. Wilbur Bruce, the former Carlton player, heads the batting with 400 runs. Silverton Weekes, Bernard Kinch and Stephen Blackett make up the cream of the batting. Conrad Hunte will be without their Fire Shield hero Dale Richards, out with a knee injury, but they are still confident. “We will miss Dale, but we will give our best. It’s a tough game, Dover is a hard team but I am looking forward to winning,” said captain Peter Headley. Veteran DaCosta Atherley is Conrad Hunte’s leading player. He has scored over 400 runs and has also been bowling well. In his last final, against BRC in 1995, he scored a century and he must produce a similar knock to help Conrad Hunte’s cause. Opening fast bowler Ronald Benjamin and spinners Sherlock Ramsay and Lawrence Leacock will offer assistance in the bowling, while the formidable batting line-up includes Anthony Headley and Rommell King. Umpires for the game are Von Collings and Martin Parks; Richard Barth is the stand-by. The final continues tomorrow. Teams: DOVER: Vibert Greene (captain), Litchfield Kirton, Jerry Kirton, Wilbur Bruce, Silverton Weekes, Rene Sargeant, Ryan Durant, Richard Thornton, Adrian Gittens, Stephen Blackett, Bernard Kinch, Eddie Carter CONRAD HUNTE (Peter Headley (captain), DaCosta Atherley, Sherlock Ramsay, Ronald Benjamin, Lawrence Leacock, Anderson Headley, Romel KIng, James Phillips, J.
