Uncertainty over Hunte’s successor 7 December 1999
There is still some uncertainty about a successor to Sir Conrad Hunte as president of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA). Since Sir Conrad’s death on Friday, first vice-president Stephen Alleyne has assumed the role of acting president. There was a feeling in some quarters that Alleyne would automatically succeed Sir Conrad, but according to the BCA rules, there could be an election to fill the post. “Whenever there occurs a vacancy, which in the opinion of the board is not of a temporary nature, the board may summon an extraordinary general meeting to fill such vacancy,” says Rule 13 (c). “Any member of the association elected at any such extra-ordinary general meeting to fill a vacancy (other than a casual vacancy) shall hold office for the remainder of the term of the member of the board in whose place he is elected.” In January 1994, the then BCA president Captain Peter Short relinquished the post to become head of the West Indies Cricket Board after he was elected two months earlier. Cammie Smith, who was the BCA first vice-president under Short, assumed the post of president in January and was re-elected unopposed at the July 1994 annual general meeting. The new BCA board came into office on October 12 and under the new rules of the association the term of office for the president has been extended from one year to two. In October 1996 when board member Keith Boyce died, his position was not filled until the annual general meeting in July of the following year.
