Ranjith de Silva dies Daily News - 8 August 1999 Reputed Attorney-at-Law and cricketer cum administrator, 59-year-old Ranjith de Silva passed away on Friday afternoon suddenly in a Singapore court house while appearing in a case. Ranjith who was attending the court in the afternoon session had collapsed and had been rushed to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead on admission. Emminent labour lawyer Ranjith, represented St. Benedict's College at cricket and hockey. On leaving college, he entered the University of Colombo and also played cricket and hockey. Ranjith played for St. Benedict's in 1959 under Lionel Fernando and in 1960 under Elmo Rodrigopulle. He was a reliable opening batsman and a smart wicketkeeper. Ranjith first joined Sri Lanka Transport Board as a legal consultant and continued his practice in Colombo. He was a longstanding executive committee member of BCCSL. President of Mutwal Sports Club, president Fishtail Aquatic Club, he was also the vice president of Colombo District Cricket Association. Ranjith also held the post of president of Modera-Mattakkuliya Lions Club in the late eighties. He leaves behind his wife Nalini, son Suranjith - former Josephian cricketer and daughter Roshini. Ranjit de Silva was 59 years of age at the time of his death. He was a fine sportsman during his hey days and after playing cricket for St. Benedict's, he went on to represent the University of Peradeniya and captained the university in seven sports, including cricket and football. He passed out as an advocate from the Sri Lanka Law College and captained the Law College at cricket. He specialised in labour law and human rights and was chairman of the Human Rights Centre. He continued his interest in sports even while practicing and was president of Mutwal Sports Club and was a former executive committee member of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka. He was a former president of the Lions Club of Modera/Mattakkuliya. Funeral arrangements will be notified later.
