Gough could pose gamble for England Martin Searby - 7 August 1999 Darren Gough, the England fast bowler, has been ordered to rest his damaged left leg for six weeks which means the selectors will have to take a substantial gamble on his fitness if he is to be included in the party to tour South Africa this winter. The hyper-active Gough has also been told that if he fails to follow doctor's orders the leg will be immobilised and put in plaster. ``We have read the riot act to him and spelled out that he must not do any running or put any stress on it at all,'' said Carole Becker, the Yorkshire physiotherapist. ``He can do a bit of swimming and gym work to maintain fitness but that's all.'' Five scans on the leg have showed no more serious injury and the damage has been put down to wear and tear, probably exacerbated by Gough's action which puts his whole weight on the ball of his left foot. The tour parties are due to be picked after the final Test against New Zealand, which finishes on Aug 23.
