In a week where the Test selectors have shown some boldness by picking a squad with an eye on the future, those responsible for choosing the England Under-19 side to face Australia in the first of three four-day Tests starting at Edgbaston today have been pragmatic.

Of the 12-strong squad, only Warwickshire all-rounder Ian Bell, Durham slow left-armer Graeme Bridge and Surrey batsman Michael Carberry will be eligible for this winter's tour of Malaysia and England's defence of the Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka.

England make three changes to the squad who lost the final one-day international against Australia, and the series 2-1. Glamorgan's Mark Wallace, who did not have the best of times behind the stumps, is replaced by Essex's James Foster. Durham pace bowler Ian Hunter is also called up while Giles Haywood, from Sussex, steps down.

Hunter comes in after catching the eye of England coach Tim Boon, the former Leicestershire batsman.

The coach has some leeway to blood younger players in the final match at the Riverside as the present squad are for the first two Tests only.
