Nannu's Departure
Zahid Newaz in Dhaka - 26 August 1999

Minhazul Abedin Nannu, rated one of the best and most popular cricketer of Bangladesh, Wednesday announced his retirement from international cricket.

But, on the same day, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) included the name of the all-roundere for the conditioning camp beginning on September 1 under the new coach, South African Eddie Barlow.

In a statement sent to newspaper offices Wednesday night, Nannu said he will be able to play another one or two years, but thought this was the proper time to say good-bye to international cricket.

``I have already intimated his decision to the BCB in writing,'' he said in the brief statement.

The middle-order batsman, who showed brilliant form in the recently concluded World Cup, started his international career in 1983 and served the national team for long 17 years.

He was included in the national squad for World Cup at the last moment in a dramatic decision by the BCB.

Nannu, a right-handed batsman, said he would, however, continue to play in the domestic cricket and wished to serve the country by his experience.

Meanwhile, the BCB picked up 38 cricketers for the conditioning camp that will start at the Savar BKSP from September 1.

They are:

Aminul Islam Bulbul, Khaled Mahmud Sujon, Mehrab Hossain Opee, Shahriar Hossain Bidyut, Akram Khan, Minhajul Abedin Nannu, Enamul Haque Moni, Khaled Masud Pilot, Hasibul Hossain Shanta, Mohammed Rafique, Naimur Rahman Durjoy, Shafiuddin Ahmed Babu, Neyamur Rashid Rahul, Monjurul Islam, Mahbubur Rahman Selim, Al Shahriar Rokon, Aminul Islam Bhola, Jahangir Alam, Javed Omar Belim, Mohammed Hasanuzzaman, Nasirul Islam Nahid, Sanwar Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahman Babu, Golam Murtaza, Habibul Bashar Sumon, Harunur Rashid Liton, Athar Ali Khan, Sajid Hasan, Ridwan Hasan, Saiful Islam, Rashidul Haq, Selim Shahed, Anisur Rahman, Atiar Rahman, Ehsanul Haq, MAK Sumon, Kamal Ahmed Colonel and Zakir Hossain.
