Lancashire League: Saturday round-up Lancashire Evening Telegraph - 26 April 1999 An overnight deluge meant only two games were completed in the EW Cartons Lancashire League on Saturday, East Lancs and Burnley both winning. There was play in only one other match, with Accrington holding the upper hand on Colne when rain came shortly after 5.30pm. That game was eventually abandoned so the five fixtures which failed to produce a result will now be replayed on Saturday, May 29. East Lancs' South African professional Claude Henderson began a bumper weekend by destroying Lowerhouse on a helpful pitch at Alexandra Meadows, but only after Paul Kelly (26) and Chris Riley (26no) had earlier shared what proved to be a crucial stand to rescue the Blackburn side from deep trouble. Staggering to 13-5 in difficult conditions, East Lancs slipped to 28-6 but Kelly and Riley fought back with a partnership of 38 to help the side to 100-9 from 43 overs. Lowerhouse professional Martin Van Jaarsveld took 5-51 and Jez Hope 3-28. Van Jaarsveld hit 24 but it was a vain effort as wickets tumbled around him and East Lancs had 27 runs to spare at the end with Henderson taking 6-34. Kamran Farooq's first five-wicket haul in the Lancashire League set Burnley on the way to a winning weekend. Farooq bowled unchanged to finish with 5-45 as Bacup were restricted to 91-9 from their 39 overs after a delayed start. Some 150 gallons of water were removed from the Turf Moor ground by the Burnley waterhog which allowed a start at just before three o'clock. Ian Whitehead and Simon Edmondson added 36 in 12 overs to guide Burnley to the brink of a four-wicket victory they achieved with three balls to spare. The rain wrecked Accrington's chances of a win at Colne, after Tariq Hussain took 5-26 to restrict the home side to 87-9.
