Day three, fourth Test, Antigua Recreation Ground
As I promised, today confirmed the determination in our camp to ensure
that we leave the Caribbean with the Frank Worrell trophy retained.
Before the start of this Test, Swampy Marsh and 'Tugga' took all the
batsmen aside and asked for a special effort in this match. We all knew
how important it was for us to step up a gear in this all-important
game.
After taking the final four West Indies cheaply this morning, the crunch
time of the series kicked off when Slats and Blewy walked out to bat for
our second innings. Once again the coach and skipper reiterated the
importance of a big effort from the whole top order. At stumps they are
both very pleased with the afternoon's proceedings.
For me personally it is a relief to have gone on with the job after
being run out in the first innings. No doubt though, the demons will
play havoc tonight when I try and get some sleep. Fourteen runs to the
century will seem like an eternity tonight as every conceivable
possibility makes its way through my weary mind. Experience tells me not
to let the thoughts run rampant, but having been in this situation
before I know that no matter what I do the thoughts won't disappear.
I must admit, that although personal glory is satisfying, I personally
won't be relaxing until I see the final West Indian batsman making his
way back to the home changing room. Before this game I was fired up for
a victory and I can tell you that fire has only strengthened into a
raging bonfire as our position in this game strengthens.
Time for some rest.
From Antigua, JL
PS: It was fantastic seeing Mark Waugh returning to form today. He will
be a vital part of the World Cup campaign in May.
