Lancs try out youngsters The Electronic Telegraph - 8 April 1999 With former Cambridge captain Mike Atherton injured and Andy Flintoff, Ian Austin and Neil Fairbrother in Sharjah, Lancashire open the season today by taking a number of young players to Fenner's. Michael Smethurst, 22, a seam bowler, is set to make his first-class debut. With Warren Hegg, Peter Martin and spinners Gary Keedy and Gary Yates rested, there is a place in the side for Chris Schofield, the former England Under-19 leg-spinner. James Whitaker is set to play his first County Championship match for 18 months against Essex at Chelmsford next week. A knee injury resulted in Whitaker missing the whole of last season as Leicestershire won the championship for the second time in three years. Fixtures 1st day of 3 (11.30am)
