First Match: England vs Pakistan : 07-04-1999

  • It was the 140th match on this ground.
  • It was the 72nd match played by Pakistan on this ground. It has won 48 and lost 24.
  • It was the 10th match played by England on this ground. It has won 6 and lost 4.
  • It was the 42nd match between the two sides. The record now reads: England 26,Pakistan 15, abandoned 1.
  • Andrew Flintoff was making his debut. He became 154th player to appear for England in ODIs. By scoring a 50 in the match, Flintoff became the 15th Englishman to score 50 plus runs on debut.
  • Pakistan's total of 324-5 is its highest against England.It surpasses the previous highest of 263 in 50.5 overs at The Oval on 22-05-1992.
  • It is also the highest ever total made against England in a ODI. The previous highest made against England was WestIndies' 313 for 6 in 50 overs at St.Vincent on 02-03-1994.
  • It was the 16th occasion when Pakistan scored 300 plus runs in an innings. On the other hand it was fourth instance of 300 plus runs being made against England.
  • The match aggregate of 556 for the loss of 15 wickets is second highest in England-Pakistan matches after 565 for the loss of 15 wickets in 105.5 overs at The Oval on 22-05-1992.
  • Ijaz Ahmed scored his tenth hundred in 222nd match. He thus surpassed Rameez Raja's tally of 9 hundreds. Now only Saeed Anwar (15) has scored more hundreds than Ijaz for Pakistan.
  • Ijaz's innings is the highest for Pakistan against Enland obli- terating Javed Miandad's 113 at The Oval on 21-05-1987 and Rameez Raja's 113 at Karachi on 20-10-1987.
  • Ijaz now holds the record of playing highest individual innings for Pakistan at Sharjah jointly with Inzamam-ul-Haq.Inzamam had scored 137 (not out) against NewZealand on 20-04-1994.
  • Ijaz, however, just failed to overhaul his personal best, which still remains 139 (not out), made against India at Lahore on 02-10-1997.
  • The third wicket stand of 145 runs between Inzamam and Ijaz is Pakistan's best for this wicket against England obliterating the 139 runs stand between Imran Khan and Javed Miandad at Melbourne on 25-03-1992 (in world cup final).
  • Graeme Hick, when reached 10, completed his 3000 runs in ODIs in his 88th match and 87th innings. Hick became fifth Englishman after Graham Gooch (4290 runs in 125 matches), Allan Lamb (4010 in 122), Alec Stewart (3229 in 117) and David Gower (3170 in 114) and 54th batsman in the world to do so.
  • Shahid Afridi, when dismissed Mark Ealham, completed his 50 wickets in ODIs in his 78th match.He became 12th Pakistani and 103rd bowler to do so.
  • Ijaz Ahmed won Man of the Match award for the 12th time in his career.

Second Match : India vs Pakistan : 08-04-1999

  • It was the 75th match between the two sides.The record now reads: Pakistan 46, India 25, abandoned 4.
  • Pakistan has now beaten India in 8 consecutive matches-four times in Toronto, thrice in India ... and now in Sharjah.
  • India has now suffered defeat by the hands of Pakistan by over 100 runs margin three times in last four matches.
  • Inzamam-ul-Haq made his sixth hundred in 179th match.
  • Inzamam-ul-Haq won Man of the Match award for the 15th time in his career.

Third Match : England vs India : 09-04-1999

  • It was the 34th match between the two sides.The record now reads: England 19, India 14, abandoned 1.
  • India registered its first win over England in last five matches.
  • Mohammad Azharuddin, when reached 67, became the most prolific run scorer for India at Sharjah. At the end of this match, Azharuddin has a tally of 1541 runs from 57 matches (and 53 innings) and he surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's aggregate of 1533 runs from 33 matches (and 33 innings).
  • Jadeja won Man of the Match award for the ninth time in his career.

Fourth Match :England vs India, 11-04-1999

  • Neil Fairbrother, when reached 6, completed his 2000 runs in ODIs in his 69th match (67th innings). He became ninth Englishman and 78th batsman to do so.
  • The ninth wicket partnership of 31 between Graham Thorpe and Darren Gough is best for England for this wicket against India.The pair obliterated the previous best of 25 between Graham Dilley and Paul Allott at Manchester on 22-06-1983.
  • The tenth wicket partnership of 13 runs between Darren Gough and Angus Fraser equals England's best for this wicket against Pakistan. Bob Taylor and Peter Lever had added 13 runs for the unbroken 10th wicket partnership at Birmingham on 03-09-1974.
  • The three catches taken by Vince Wells is the best performance by an Englishman in the field at Sharjah. Previously three fielders had taken two catches: Martin Moxon, vs Australia on 24-03-1985, Tim Robinson, vs Pakistan on 26-03-1985 and Phil Edmonds, vs India on 02-04-1987.
  • Wells also equalled the best performance by an Englishman in the field. A total of 10 players have now taken 3 catches in an innings on 11 occasions for England with Neil Fairbrother doing so twice.
  • Venkatesh Prasad won his first Man of the Match award. He became 37th Indian to win the award in ODIs.

Fifth Match :England vs Pakistan, 12-04-1999

  • Azhar Mahmood completed his 50 wickets in ODIs by dismissing Graeme Hick. Mahmood was playing his 58th match. He became 13th Englishman and 104th bowler to do so.
  • The seventh wicket partnership of 63 between Graham Thorpe and Mark Ealham is best for England for this wicket against Pakistan. This obliterates the previous record stand of 54 between Mike Gatting and Derek Pringle at Manchester on 19-07-1982.
  • Shoaib Akhtar took four wickets for the first time in his career. He became 24th Pakistani to capture four wickets on 95th occasion. Incidentally it was the sixth instance of a Pakistani bowler capturing four wickets in a match against England.
  • Mark Ealham captured four wickets for the second time in his career. He provided the 55th instance of a English bowler capturing four wickets in a match. Incidentally it was the sixth such instance for England against Pakistan.
  • By scoring 36 runs and then capturing 4 wickets in Pakistan's innings, Ealham became only the third Englishman to perform the allround feat of 30 plus runs and 4 wickets in the same match. Others to do so for England are : Ian Botham (53 & 4-31, vs Australia, Sydney, 05-03-1992) and Craig White (39 & 4-37, vs New Zealand, Napier,26-02-1997.
  • Mark Ealham won Man of the Match award for the second time in his career.

Sixth Match :India vs Pakistan, 13-04-1999

  • India registered its first win over Pakistan after eight consecutive defeats.
  • Though it was India's fifth victory over Pakistan at Sharjah, it was the first occasion when India defeated Pakistan at Sharjah while chasing a target. India had suffered defeat in all previous 10 matches batting second against Pakistan at Sharjah.
  • Saeed Anwar, when reached 15, became the leading run scorer against India in ODIs.At the end of this match, Anwar had a tally of 1673 runs from 42 matches and he surpassed Sri Lanka's Aravinda De Silva's aggregate of 1662 runs from 53 matches (ave.36.93)
  • Wasim Akram was run-out for the 31st time in his ODI career.He has now been dismissed in this fashion on 31 occasions-the most for any batsman in shorter version of the game.He was previouly at level with India's Mohammad Azharuddin with 30 such dismissals (Just for the record, Sri Lanka's Arjuna Ranatunga with 29 run-outs and Akram's fellow countryman Inzamam-ul-Haq with 28 run-outs are not very far behind).
  • Sadagopan Ramesh won Man of the Match award for the first time in his career.

Seventh Match (Final) : India vs Pakistan : 16-04-1999

  • Pakistan registered its 17th title win in ODIs (10th at Sharjah).
  • It was Pakistan's 50th win at Sharjah. Pakistan's record at this ground now reads : played 76, won 50,lost 26.
  • It was India's 30th loss at Sharjah. India's record at this ground now reads: played 58,won 28, lost 30.
  • It was the sixth time two teams were meeting in the final of a tournament. Pakistan has now won on four occasions, while India emerged winner on two occasions. The following table lists the tournament finals between the two teams :

  • India equalled its lowest total at Sharjah.India was dismissed for 125 in 42.4 overs against Pakistan on 22-03-1985.
  • First two wickets of Indian innings fell without a run being scored. It was the first such instance for India and ninth overall.

  • Just for the record, the lowest total to include an individual fifty is 84 for 2 by Pakistan against England at Birmingham on 03-09-1974 with Zaheer Abbas scoring 57 (not out).
