The Observer-Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 1998 awards will take place next Saturday (November 21) at 6.00 p.m. at the BMICH.

Besides the awards for both outstation and Colombo based schoolboy cricketers, there will be the usual star-spangled musical extravaganza to keep the large gathering entertained.

All schoolboy cricketers who have won awards are requested to get in touch with Mr. Errol Nugawela of Bata Shoe Company at Tel: 61-1709 without further delay to collect their entry passes.

The following are the awards winners:

Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year: Pradeep Hewage (St. Benedict's College)
Runner-up: Prasanna Jayawardena (St. Sebastian's Moratuwa).
Outstation Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year: Malinga Bandara (Kalutara Vidyalaya).
Runner-up: Chamara de Soyza (Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda)
Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer (All-Island): Roshan de Silva (St. Joseph's).
Runner-up: Upeka Fernando (S. Thomas', Mount Lavinia).
Most Popular Outstation Schoolboy Cricketer: Chanaka Wijesinghe (St. Sylvester's)
Runner-up: Lalin Anthony (Maris Stella, Negombo).

Outstation Contest

Best Batsman: Chamara de Soyza (Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda).
Runner-up: Chamara Silva (Royal, Panadura).
Best Bowler: Malinga Bandara (Kalutara Vidyalaya).
Runner-up: Ranil Dhammika (Lumbini MV).
Best Fielder: J. Sivanesarajan (St. Anthony's, Wattala).
Runner-up: J. C. Kottachchi (Kalutara Vidyalaya).
Best All-rounder: Ranga Dissanayake (St. Sylvester's Kandy).

All-Island Contest

Best Batsman: Upeka Fernando (S. Thomas's Mount Lavinia).
Runner-up: Pradeep Hewage (St. Benedict's).
Best Bowler: Malintha Warnapura (St. Peter's).
Runner-up: A. Junaid (D. S. Senanayake College).
Best Fielder: Prasanna Jayawardena (St. Sebastian's, Moratuwa),
Runner-up: Rally Tissera (St. Benedict's).
Best All-rounder: Pradeep Hewage (St. Benedict's).
Runner-up: Malintha Warnapura (St. Peter's).
Best Captain: Malintha Warnapura (St. Peter's).

Special Merit Award: Lasitha de Silva (16 year-old) of Revatha MMV, Balapitiya, represented School XI - Performance 815 runs at an average of 40.7 from 21 innings, captured 67 wickets off 409.3 overs, with 71 overs being maidens, conceding 109 runs for average of 17.83 runs per wicket.

Best Teams

Central Province: St. Sylvester's College, Runner-up: Trinity.
Southern Province: Mahinda College, Runner-up: St. Aloysius College, Galle).
All-Island: St. Peter's College, Runner-up: Ananda College.
Best Up and Coming Team: Sri Sumangala MMV, Wariyapola.
